Venezuela: The Jewish community has been reduced by 50% in 10 years

The economy, insecurity and anti-Semitic attacks contribute to rise in migration

It seems like the Jewish community of Venezuela has started its own diaspora. The figures by the Confederation of Jewish Associations of Venezuela (CAIV) show that half of this sector of the population has fled the country for various reasons.

"10 years ago we were 18,000; we are now around 9,500 (members of the Jewish community)", the president of the CAIV, Solomon Cohen, told the Jerusalem Post.

According to the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Antisemitism and Racism, based in Tel Aviv, the number of Jews in Venezuela came to 15,000 in 2008, meaning that in one year, approximately 5,500 have left the country - the majority of Venezuelan Jews.

Cohen explained that there are three reasons why the Jewish community are leaving the country: "First, the economy has not been well for the past 10 years, second security in general is very bad. We have many murders", he says.

According to the president of the CAIV, the third reason for emigration is anti-Semitic attacks. He affirmed that there have been 200 events against the Jewish community.

Fears

Cohen Solomon is in Jerusalem, where he presented the report on the reality of the community to the World Jewish Congress. The security issue of the Venezuelan Jewish population was addressed.

"The biggest concern for Venezuela's Jewish community is its fear that some of the statements by the President, Hugo Chavez, be transformed into a situation of violence against Jews", he told the Jewish News Agency, Saul Gilvich, general secretary American Jewish Congress.

The President of the Delegation of Israeli Associations of Argentina (DAIA), Aldo Donzis, confirmed that "there is a permanent concern" within the Jewish community of Venezuela because of the constant anti-Semitic manifestations in the press".

Indeed, the latest report published by the Stephen Roth Institute on Anti-Semitism in Venezuela - for 2008-2009 - mentions that most anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist expressions come from circles close to the President, Hugo Chávez, and details the comments made officials and supporters of the president in the state-owned media.

However, the president of the CAIV stresses the need to maintain dialogue with the Venezuelan government, which had a breakthrough with Chavez's meeting with world leaders and representatives of the Jewish community of Venezuela on August 13, 2008.

"We have direct communication with government departments responsible for providing security", said Cohen, adding that those lines of communication are well established, "although we wish we had more than that".

Meanwhile, the Israeli government monitors the situation. The Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rafael Barak, and the Minister of Public Affairs and Diaspora, Yuli Edelstein, both attended the World Jewish Congress.

Argentina: Concern over Anti-Semitic Graffiti

The Argentinean Ministry of Justice and Homeland Security is investigating the origin of this weekend's anti-Semitic graffiti at the "State of Israel" Plaza in the province of Neuquén.

Hernando Grosbaum, the Israeli Consul in Patagonia, told the newspaper "La Mañana Neuquén" that what distinguishes this painting from others that have been made in this and in other parts of the country, is that the inscription is in Arabic, which caught the attention of authorities.

The graffiti incites jihad (holy war) and is written with perfect knowledge of Arabic calligraphy as it is perfectly legible.

"It is different to write something that is intended for everyone to understand, than to write something specifically targeted at those who can understand it. That is very worrisome," said Grosbaum. "Specialists are trying to discern what it is about, to whom it is addressed and who could have written it."

The Israeli Ambassador, Daniel Gazit, told the Jewish News Agency that "this fact must be taken with utmost seriousness, especially these days, when Israel and the Palestinian Authority are closer to resume direct negotiations of peace."

Chile: Senators Seeking to Criminalize Incitement to Racial and Religious Hatred

Chilean Senators Guido Girardi, Juan Pablo Letelier, Mariano Ruiz-Esquide, Carlos Cantero and Andrew Chadwick expressed deep concern over the spate of anti-Semitic acts that occurred in synagogues and Hebrew schools, as well as death threats against the president of the Chilean Jewish community, Gabriel Zaliasnik, and to his son of 9 years. For this reason, they announced the filing of a bill that seeks to criminalize "hate speech."
Senator Guido Girardi said, "We believe that this is not a problem just for the Jewish community, but for the entire Chilean society. We would not accept graffiti against the Catholic Church and we believe that there would be many voices against these acts, as it would also be the case within Islamic communities. Therefore, this situation is unacceptable under any circumstances", he said. For that reason, he mentioned that "we will present a bill which criminalizes the incitement to hatred and punishes those who infringe on these values and principles. We do not want to have in Chile discriminatory practices that incite hatred. Our legislation, in contrast to others, only sets fines and sanctions, but it does not define crime and punishment."

Chile: Anti-Semitic Attack

The Chilean Jewish community denounced an anti-Semitic attack in the kindergarten of the Hebrew Institute, as its facade was vandalized by unknown individuals.

Along with a swastika, the message "Juden raus" (Jews Out) was written on the wall. It had a rune-style "s", bearing similarity to the Schutzstaffel logo of Adolph Hitler's regime.

"Last night there were neo-Nazi signs gain, this time in the Children's Garden of the Hebrew Institute, #naziCh", posted Gabriel Zaliasnik, president of the Jewish Community, on Twitter.

On Monday, the lawyer himself commented in The First Coffee Cooperative about the "fervent anti-Semitism in Chile", following threats he received on the Internet.

The graffiti in the Hebrew Institute bears similarity to the Arab College case from October 2009, when the College's walls were tainted with messages such as "Palestine does not exist" and "Arab = terrorist".

Venezuela: Syria Strengthens an Alliance Against Israel in Latin America

"The Syrian community in the country is deeply committed to the revolutionary struggle and is the protagonist of the Bolivarian Revolution" ... "We need to unite with the Arab people. Bashar has contributed to this. We have common enemies: the genocidal state of Israel and the U.S. empire. We have the same goals: to lead a socialist revolution," the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez Frias, said on Sunday (27/06/2010) at the Palace of Miraflores.

Chavez is "an Arab leader" and is "in the heart of the Arab world”, President Assad said among applauses during his speech in front of hundreds of enthusiastic guests. "We are not flattering; it's the truth. We see his position on Gaza, we see the historical position of Venezuela," the Syrian president added.

Report:

The Syrian President, Bashar Assad, visited Caracas last weekend, before heading to Brazil and Argentina, on a tour of political and economic character that also included Cuba. This tour was essentially of political content, aimed at building an anti-Israeli alliance with the so-called “Bolivarian axis” and two of the most solid supporters of Syria in Latin America: the intermediary President Hugo Chavez and his colleagues Lula da Silva and Cristina Fernandez. It is interesting how, in all of these countries, except Cuba, there is a large colony of Syrian origin (in Argentina they even put Menem as a tenant of the Casa Rosada).

The Syrian leader has also received the full backing of the Venezuelan president to regain the Golan Heights from Israel, suggesting that Venezuela would provide every means at its disposal to achieve this goal. Assad and Chavez are committed to supporting all of Iran’s initiatives, both those designed to circumvent the sanctions adopted by the UN over its nuclear program (and later compounded by those adopted by the United States and the European Union), and those designed to harass Israel before the international public opinion; for example, by sending successive so-called "humanitarian fleet" to the Gaza Strip.

In their proclamations to forge this new alliance, the two presidents have self-identified as “the axis of the brave", as opposed to the "axis of evil" coined by former U.S. President George W. Bush. Indeed, although President Obama does not use that term – which originally referred to Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea, and subsequently amended, – this has not eased the pressure on whom the United States considers sources of terrorist activities or necessary cooperators, under which Tehran and Damascus are still classified.

In the same political line, Bashar Assad has also reaffirmed with Raul Castro Syrian their support for Syrian claims, coupled with those of the Palestinian people. Although the statements condemning Israel have not been as raucous in Havana as they have been in Caracas, the international attempt to marginalize Israel is the same. Moreover, the political identification of the three leaders – Chavez, Castro, and Assad – albeit through different procedures, practically agree.

To complete the agenda, the tour also has an economic and commercial component, although of much smaller scale than that of the political section. There are several agreements being signed to promote bilateral trade, on top of investments in strategic sectors. It is particularly important to build a refinery in Syria, in which 33% of the capital would be Venezuelan, and the remaining 67% would be Syrian, Iranian and Malaysian. The technology will be provided entirely by Caracas. This enhanced relationship will also require expanding the regular air links. The Caracas-Tehran mysterious flight that connects the two capitals every week, with a load that has aroused many suspicions according to the secret services of several countries, could include a stopover in Damascus. However, encouraging tourism may not be the main objective of this action.

Bilateral Agreements:

The Ministers of Agriculture from Venezuela and Syria will produce and distribute olive oil and cotton together. The agreement between the two countries was announced on Saturday night (6/26/2010) in a ceremony held in the Miraflores presidential palace, after a long working meeting between the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, and Syria, Bashar Al Assad, on his visit to Caracas.

All in all, the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, offered to the member countries of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), to include Syria as an observer country of the forthcoming summit of the group. "Although it is something I first consult with the other dignitaries of the member states, I do not think there any objection to achieve it," Chavez said.

Other Declarations:

"Long live Syria! We had a wonderful family time with the Syrian community. I feel like a son of Syria, and you should all feel like children of Venezuela. Jose Marti, the Cuban national hero, said: Homeland is Humanity ", emphasized President Chávez.

The president saw this visit and the signing of agreements as highly strategic, "in order to strengthen the integration of our peoples."

"Capitalism is the greatest enemy of the people. Only with socialism we will be free. We must work hard to consolidate the new pluriplural world, and rid the world from the clutches of imperialism ", he confirmed.

The writer Abel Basti says the Nazi Fuhrer died in Argentina

”The suicide in the bunker in Berlin and with the Russians at the door, was a farce staged by the Nazis”.

This is the contention of the Argentinen historian Abel Basti, in his book "Hitler's Exile".

Basti says he started working on this issue when the case of SS captain Erich Priebke, who was arrested while he was interviewing him at home, broke out.
The Nazi remained under arrest at his home for months and was finally extradited to Italy.

In 'The exile of Hitler' Basti claims that the German dictator did not die along with Eva Braun in the bunker in Berlin, but that the Fuehrer fled to Argentina stopping in Barcelona, where he remained hidden, and in Vigo, where he boarded the submarine that took him to Patagonia.

Basti provides a secret document where Hitler supposedly appears as one of the passengers who were evacuated on an Austrian plane to Barcelona on April 26, 1945. He claims that Hitler’s suicide, with his lover, Eva Braun, on April 30th, 1945 in a bunker in the building of the Chancellery in Berlin was "a farce staged by the Nazis."

"The big secret of the dictator’s flight was the arrival of a double at Hitler´s bunker on April 22, 1945, when the real dictator flew to the Austrian airport of Hörsching together with eight other people, including Eva Braun "

This version coincides with that given to the CIA by Heinrich Müller, head of the Gestapo. Basti insists that his work also includes a paper from the British Secret Services revealing that a Nazi submarine convoy departed days later from Spain, and after a stopover in the Canary Islands, continued its journey to the south of Argentina.

"In one of these submarines Adolf Hitler travelled with Eva Braun, under the protection of the de-facto president of Argentina, Edelmiro Farrell, and his Minister of War, Juan Domingo Peron."

- Are there any witnesses who saw those Nazis in Spain?, Asks Antonio Astorga on ABC.
And Basti replies:
"Yes, an officer of the Blue Division reported his presence, but many, because of fear, did not want their names to appear. A material witness is a Jesuit nonagenarian, who retreated to a monastery, and has ample information of their presence in Spain.

"You show a German secret document where Hitler appears as one of the passengers evacuated by plane from Austria to Barcelona on the 26th or on the early hours of April 27th, 1945.
"It was a secret official communication with copies to the pilot Werner Baumbach, who emigrated to Argentina and brought his copy. Baumbach, together with others known Nazi pilots, worked for Peron’s aeronautical project.

- What did Hitler do to avoid being recognized?
"Hitler cut his hair and shaved off his moustache. This was enough to go unnoticed, as well, of course, that he did not move overtly in public. The removal of his moustache exposed a scar on his upper lip, which was not known by the common people.

- Is then the version that the dictator together with his mistress Eva Braun, had committed suicide on April 30th 1945 in a bunker in Berlin, false?
"There was never any evidence of that death. No criminological proofs showing suicide. The German government gave Hitler up for dead eleven years later, in 1956, by presumption of death. That is, legally for Germany, Hitler was alive after 1945. Not only alive, but also was not a man convicted by law, there was no warrant, no judicial process against him. While Hitler was in Spain, a great farce was played in the bunker, whose lead actor was one of Hitler's doubles. During the last hours, his lookalike was drugged and prepared to represent the final act.

- Do you think that suicide was a "safeconduct", a mere excuse, so that Hitler could get away?
Hitler´s escape was provisioned in a large plan of escape by the Nazis: of men, capital and technology. That plan, in 1945, received the green light from the Americans, through a secret military pact. The thousands of Nazis that leaked into the West, of which about 300,000 came to the U.S., were "recycled" to fight communism. Hitler became a living dinosaur, protected and sheltered.

- In "Hitler's Exile,” you include the document of the British secret services revealing that Hitler fled to Argentina on a submarine, stopping to refuel in the Canary Islands.
"And you say that before the convoy of submarines left Spain, the U.S. Navy removed all units sailing the South Atlantic. You also indicate that Nazi submarines “exchanged messages" with the American fleet. The messages were intercepted by the English.

- How did the nazi worm crawl into Argentina?
"Hitler was 56 years old when he came to Argentina, where he lived as a fugitive, with a false identity and trying to pass as unnoticed as possible. In the early years he lived in a ranch near Bariloche, then in other parts of the country, and he changed residence in more than one occasion. Always accompanied by two bodyguards, sometimes three. His political activity was limited to a few meetings with old comrades and some Argentinian military. Hitler died in Argentina in the sixties. Eva Braun, younger than him, survived.

Venezuela's Chavez meets with Syrian President Bashar Assad, vows to fight US 'imperialism'

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met with Syrian President Bashar Assad on Saturday and called on Latin America and the Arab world to fight what he called America's imperialist and capitalist interests abroad.

During a meeting at Venezuela's presidential palace, Chavez told Assad it was an honor to host the Syrian leader on his first visit to Latin America. Chavez presented Assad with a gold-plated replica of a sword that once belonged to South American independence hero Simon Bolivar — the inspiration for his "Bolivarian Revolution."

The two leaders signed an agreement to create a $100 million trade and development fund.

"Arab civilization and our civilization, the Latin American one, are being summoned in this new century to play the fundamental role of liberating the world, saving the world from the imperialism and capitalist hegemony that threaten the human species," Chavez said. "Syria and Venezuela are at the vanguard of this struggle."

Assad praised Chavez for standing up to the United States and supporting the Palestinian struggle.

"There are few politicians who are courageous to speak out when it's necessary," he said through an interpreter. "Chavez has projected the image of a resistant Venezuela."

Assad strongly criticized Israel, calling the Jewish state's government "extremist" and condemning its blockade of Gaza.

"The resistance must be supported," he said.

Chavez is perhaps Latin's America's most outspoken critic of the United States, lashing out at the U.S. government for purportedly conspiring against him and meddling in the region's affairs. U.S. officials, in turn, have raised concerns that Chavez is becoming increasingly authoritarian.

Chavez also took a dig at the U.S. soccer team, celebrating Ghana's 2-0 victory of the Americans in a decisive World Cup match earlier on Saturday. "What a blast! Ghana won, Ghana defeated the United States," he said.

Chavez also condemned the U.N. Security Council for tightening sanctions against Iran as a means of curbing development of the Islamic state's nuclear program.

Assad said all nations, including Iran, "have the right to develop nuclear energy."

Chavez has built close diplomatic relations with Syria, Iran and other Middle Eastern countries while severing Venezuela's ties to Israel. Last year, the socialist leader visited Syria, where he called Israel an imperialist nation that annihilates its neighbors and accused its government of doing Washington's bidding by trying to divide the Middle East.

Following his meeting with Chavez, Assad is slated to travel to Cuba, Brazil and Argentina.

Venezuela: Post-Flotilla Reactions in Venezuela

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) published a report about rising anti-Semitism in Venezuela, in the aftermath of the Gaza flotilla incident. The report includes a list of remarks made by Hugo Chaves and some other key government officials, as well as a list of articles from the Venezuelan press.

As per usual, Aporrea published heavy anti-Israel and anti-Semitic content. ADL translated excerpts of some of the articles since the flotilla incident. However, it is interesting to see the amount of articles (of course, pejorative) that were published about the matter in early June. Links to Aporrea's archive (in Spanish, but it is possible to understand key words): June 1 June 2 June 3 June 4 June 5 June 6 June 7 Translations using GoogleTranslate: June 1 June 2 June 3 June 4 June 5 June 6 June 7

Lastly, the ADL also compiled anti-Israel and anti-Semitic cartoons from the Venezuelan media that relate to the flotilla accident.

It is a shame what has become of Venezuela. We can only hope that the situation does not get much worse and that the world is well-informed of the extreme anti-Israel and anti-Semitic movements that this country is producing, many times sponsored or even generated by Chaves’ government.

Venezuela: “Chavez Imports Mid East Conflict to Latin America as Cover Up for Local Rights Violations”

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez called on his Bolivia and Nicaragua allies to assault Israel at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva during the debate on the Gaza flotilla.

The move was directed by Venezuelan ally, Iran’s Ahmadinejad, thus importing the Mid East conflict into Latin America.

Both presidents have exploited the well-known tactic of Jewish conspiracy to cover up their domestic rights violations.

Hugo Chávez now accuses Israel of “financing the Venezuelan opposition, the counter-revolution”, and that “there are Mossad commandos who want to murder me.” He added provocatively that “I doubt that a Venezuelan Jew would support such an atrocity”.

“This transposition of the Arab-Israeli conflict exposes Latin America to an Iranian influence that endangers hard won democracy and, especially, Jewish communities across the continent. The OAS must hold Chávez to account for the consequences”, said Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center

“In January, 2009, following Chavez’ expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador, a pro-government group published a plan of action against the Jewish community. This was followed by the desecration of the Mariperez Synagogue”, added Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America of the Center.

Argentina: First-Ever Jewish Minister of Foreign Affairs

The ambassador of Argentina in the United States, Héctor Timerman, was appointed the new chancellor of Argentina, replacing Jorge Taiana, who resigned from the position. Timerman became the first Jewish Minister of Foreign Affairs in Argentina. He has a close bond with the Argentinean Jewish community, and he helped the relatives of the victims of the 1994 AMIA bombing in their fight for justice.

Timerman served as General Consul of Argentina in the United States from July 2004 to December 2007, when he was appointed Ambassador. Previously, he was a successful journalist, directing and collaborating with several journals both in Argentina and in the world. Timerman is a co-founder of America's Watch, a human rights organization in the United States with Observer status in the United Nations. In addition, he was a member of the Directors’ Committee of the Fund for Free Expression (now called the Free Expression Project of Human Rights Watch), an organization that fights censorship around the world..

He is the son of Jacobo Timerman, the recognized journalist who was kidnapped, disappeared and tortured during the Argentinean dictatorship. He was kidnapped in 1977 by militants under the direction of Ramón Camps, an anti-Semitic general who was later condemned of crimes against humanity. He was liberated in 1980, after which he fled to Israel and to the United States. In 1984, Jacobo Timerman gave his testimonial to the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP) and it was included in the Never More Report (Informe Nunca Más).

Venezuela: “11 Thousand Years of Palestinian History”

The Venezuelan Ministry of Culture promoted an academic-cultural event called “Palestine, 11 Thousand Years of History” (“Palestina, 11 mil años de Historia"). It took place between the 12 and 16 of May, and it was organized by several cultural, leftist and pro-Palestinian organizations. The event’s goal was to “provide a small sample of the cultural heritage of an ancient nation that refuses to disappear, a victim of cruelty, occupation and death”. The event consisted of documentaries, conferences, art galleries, debates, musical presentations, and Arab food.

The Ministry of Culture’s press release includes comments such as “a rich and diverse ancient culture, which suffers the consequences of imperial ambition”. The Venezuelan government is promoting the false idea that the Palestinians have populated the land of Israel for 11 thousand years, without even attributing any claims of Jewish history to it, or without mentioning any of the conquests that took place throughout the millennia. This is misleading for the average visitor who is not supplied with accurate factual information, and it falsely presents the Jews as new residents who have randomly come to “colonize” this land.

In addition, Susana Khali, one of the organizers, mentioned that “[…] Not only land is being stolen from the Palestinian people, but also their history. The true descendants of the ancient people of Israel are the Palestinian people and not the Nazis, Aryans and Europeans. […] The idea is to think about solving the conflict. This conflict has a solution, and any solution rests on the foundations of justice, the fight is for a single State, the right of return of the Palestinian people to their land, with the goal of ending the system of Israeli colonial horror, to put an end to Zionism, a racist ideology which violates all human essence. […] Zionism is a racist school of thought that was born in the bosom of a white European bourgeoisie, based on supremacism and denial of others. We should condemn racism, at all costs. It's about fighting for the strength of any people in the world; the Palestinians call for their right to exist as a people. […] The Palestinian people gave Christianity to the world, Judaism to the world. Christianity was not born in Europe; it was born in Palestine. It is Palestinian heritage, the stalls are a Palestinian heritage, the cross is a Palestinian heritage, and we are being driven out of history, The implementation of agriculture was born in 8,000 BC from the Canaanite people, who descended from the Canaanite people, Bethlehem was founded in 4,000 BC, Jerusalem was founded in 6,000 BC, Jericho was founded between 9,000 and 10,000 BC. Where is that history? Palestine is a prohibited people, a censured people, whose history is prohibited because we live under a dictatorial, supremacist, racist, totalitarian and totally repressive international regime. […] We tell the Mossad, the Israeli service of intelligence and penetration, that if they're going to bomb Gaza, they should also come for the Palestinians who are abroad, scattered throughout the world clamoring for our right to return. There are two Palestines: an occupied Palestine and a wandering Palestine. We want to return and fight for the right to be Palestinian. We believe we can live together, but only by ending the regime of apartheid, like any people living in the world, with equal rights."

Peru: Neo-Nazi Party Now Registered for Elections

Igualdad Nacional Cristiana Autónoma (INCA), a neo-Nazi and anti-Chile regional movement, got registered as a political party in Peru in March. The movement uses the swastika as its symbol and its members wear German Nazi uniforms.

(In the picture: Ricardo de Spirito Balbuena in an ACNA event, about five years ago)

ACNA’s leader, Ricardo de Spirito Balbuena, is known as “the Adolf Hitler of Tacna”. He once said “democracy is garbage” and that “the worst governments in Peru have been democratic and the best governments in Peru have been what many call dictatorships”. He was indicted seven times between 2000 and 2006 for blackmail, defamation and disturbing the peace, and served in prison in 2005 and 2006 for aggravated defamation. Recently, Spirito Balbuena said: “how can I be anti-Jewish if I’m a Christian?” and denied being a Nazi. He claims that the picture in which he appears with a swastika is a photomontage, and that his adversaries are the ones who call him “the Hitler of Tacna”.

The Peruvian electoral authority does not require political parties to have an ideology. However, Percy Medina, Secretary General of the Transparency Civil Association, mentioned that antidemocratic political parties can be considered illegal. The appeal would have to come from the Nation’s Fiscal or from the Ombudsman, and then processed by the Supreme Court of Justice,

Country Profile #2: Panama

Jewish Immigration (post-marranos):
• 1876: immigrants from the Caribbean founded the Kol Sherith community (now Reform)
• 1911: 505 Jews lived in Panama (Canal construction period)
• 1933: Jews from Syria and Israel founded the Sephardi community
• 1930s-1940s: Jewish European immigrants founded the Ashkenazi community
• 1947: Jewish exodus from Syria produced large immigration waves into Panama
• 1990-2000s: another wave of immigrants (both Jews and non-Jews), who came mainly from Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina due to these countries particular situation at the moment.

The Transformation:
When Rabbi Zion Levy arrived from Jerusalem in 1951, the Panamanian Jewish community was affluent but spiritually empty. Rabbi Levy helped the community and he was very effective in transforming it from a secular/traditional community to a religious one. In 2008, when he died, he left behind one of the strongest Jewish communities in Latin America. Rabbi Levy’s son, Haim, took his father’s post.

The Community Today:
Panama has the largest Jewish community in Central America, with ~8,000 Orthodox Jews (the vast majority Sephardi), ~500 Reform Jews and ~1,000 Israelis. However, Jews are only 0.27% of the 3.3 million population. About 80%-90% of the Jews are Sephardi and they originally come mostly from Syria. Therefore, Syrian traditions and costumes are predominant. The community is very affluent and has little assimilation. Religion takes an extremely important part of Panamanian Jews’ daily lives; Zionism is also significant. There is a strong business culture in the community, as a large part of the Jews work in trade, buying and selling merchandise in the Free Zone area (Colon) and in Panama City. There is, in fact, constant interaction and very little friction with Arabs, including Palestinians (3,500 Muslims in Panama).

Institutions:
The two orthodox communities, Shevet Ahim (Sephardi) and Beth El (Ashkenazi), offer full religious services. There are three synagogues, two Sephardi and one Ashkenazi, as well as two schools (1,300 students) and a yeshiva. Macabi, Bnai Brith, WIZO, and some other institutions are very active in Panama. Likewise, the reform community (Kol Sherith) has one synagogue and a school.
Panama has the largest kosher supermarket outside of Israel (1,500 sq meters) and it sells more than 10,000 products. This is not surprising as ~85% of the Jews in Panama keep kashrut, at least at home. There are also eight kosher restaurants and a Jewish country club/events hall, where most events take place. There is a Jewish country club and events hall.

Anti-Semitism:
Panama is the only country, outside of Israel, that had two Jewish presidents in the 20th century. Especially when compared to other countries, there is barely any anti-Semitism. Jews are well integrated into society, especially in commerce. However, the relatively large Palestinian population is active. For instance, there were demonstrations against Operation Cast Lead in front of Israeli Embassy in Panama (30/12/2008 and 01/01/2009).

Relations with Israel:
Panama recognized the State of Israel in June 1948 and the two countries exchanged ambassadors in 1960. Panama consistently supports Israel in the UN and it has several agreements for mutual cooperation with Israel in the fields of agriculture, education, security, and culture.

Argentina: Jewish Cemetery Was Desecrated

More than 40 graves were desecrated in the Jewish cemetery of Misiones, Argentina, on Saturday night.
Luis Magrán, the Misiones DAIA Secretary, said that "it could have been a case of robbery of bronze plaques and inscriptions in order to sell the metal. However, since this is not the first time that this happens, we cannot eliminate the possibility that there were other intentions involved."
The Jewish community of Misiones maintains the cemetery in good conditions, but it regrets that there are no police or municipal guards to prevent desecration.

Anti-Semitic news articles published in Venezuelan media between April 26 and May 3, 2010

Bn’ai Brith Venezuela compiles a weekly list of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel news pieces from the main media in the country. Most of these articles have shocking titles or content, which is why it is important to translate this list into English and diffuse it globally. I try to translate as closely as possible to the Spanish version, so that the essence of the information is preserved. I have also searched for the original article on the internet, if it is available.

SPECIAL NOTE: I have left the Spanish term "Cisjordania" instead of substituting it for "Judea and Samaria", "the West Bank", "the disputed territories", or similar expressions, since each name carries its own connotation.

Latin America: Iran's Commercial Battlefield

It seems like Iran is taking advantage of the global economic crisis to increased its commercial presence in Latin America, in order to reduce the United States' influence in the region. In 2008, Iran's trade with Latin America was reportedly US$2.9 billion, triple what it was in 2007. Although nominally it may not seem like a lot, the growth rates from 2007 are astonishing. For example:
- Argentina: US$1.2 billion in 2008 (from US$30 million in 2007)
- Ecuador: US$168 million in 2008 (from US$6 million in 2007)
- Venezuela: US$52 million in 2008 (+31% from 2007)
- Cuba: US$50 million in 2008 (+50% from 2007)
(Data: 4/12/09, UPI and 6/4/10, Reuters)

It is public knowledge that Latin American leaders, such as Hugo Chaves in Venezuela and Raul Castro in Cuba, allow Ahmadinejad to step into the region to "liberate" it from the United States' economic and social "imperialistic domination". This is not surprising – we have seen Ahmadinejad and Chaves shake hands on multiple occasions. Just a few weeks ago, Cuba announced increased cooperation with Iran in the fields of biotechnology and sugar, as part of its global commercial diversification plan to overcome its liquidity crisis. (6/4/10, Reuters) Cuba and Venezuela even attended Iran's nuclear conference in April.

What is really surprising (and preoccupying) is the strengthening of economic relations between Iran and some of the more independent and advanced Latin American countries, which also host a large number of Jews. Ahmadinejad's government recently announced that Brazil and Argentina are its two strongest commercial allies in Latin America, respectively. Mohsen Shaterzadeh Yazdi, Iran's ambassador in Brazil, described Latin America as the battlefield in its confrontation with "arrogant powers", obviously referring to the United States. (6/4/10, Prensa Judía)

Simultaneously, Brazil's Chancellor, Celso Amorim, defended Brazil's policy of sustaining economic ties with Iran. He argued that it is still possible to use dialog in order to reach an agreement that will allow the international community to watch Iran's nuclear plans. Amorim also said that the United States' policies will only radicalize Iran and make its people suffer more, since economic sanctions will hurt the poor classes more. (6/4/10, Reuters) Argentina's extremist politician Luis D'Elia (practically Ahmadinejad's lobby envoy in Buenos Aires) regularly holds meetings with government officials in Iran, as well as with Argentinean businesspeople to create commercial partnerships with Iran. He even advocated that Argentina should not only develop multimillion business deals with Iran, but also sign an agreement for nuclear cooperation to enrich uranium. (4/4/10, Infobae)

Just the fact that Latin American countries are expanding their commercial ties with Iran in a time when the developed world is trying to raise sanctions against it, is a red flag in its own. In some cases, these nations simply may be looking for ways to mitigate the effect of the economic crisis on their trade balances. Some others may reflect genuine willingness to have Iran as a partner. What is certain is that, while it is unlikely that Iranian-Latin American trade will make a material shift in the global markets, the region has the potential to fortify Iran's economy. The potential of Latin American's vast natural resources, large population and strategic geographical position is significant, especially if combined with the wrong political alliances.

Chile: Pedophile Nazi criminal and Pinochet supporter died in prison

Paul Schafer, a pedophile and criminal from both Hitler's Germany and Pinochet's Chile, died from cardiac problems on Saturday in a Chilean prison. Schafer served as a medic in the Nazi army. In 1959, he established an institution to help children in social risk in Sieburg. However, after being accused of sexual abuse of two children, he fled to Chile in 1961. There he founded Colonia Dignidad, a self-sufficient, anti-Semitic, isolated German colony (some call it a cult). Chilean officials claim that the 16,000-hectar colony served as a torture and interrogation camp during the Pinochet era (1973-1990), with former Gestapo officers providing torture lessons to Pinochet's opponents.

After accusations of sexual abuse of 25 children from the colony, Schafer fled Chile in 1997. In 2004, he was convicted in absentia of homicide, child abuse, illegal traffic of arms, and torture. The following year, he was found in Argentina, from where he was extradited. At the time of his death, he was 89 years old and had only served 4 years of his 33-year sentence (including 20 for pedophilia). He was also being investigated for the 1985 disappearance of Boris Weisfeiler, an Jewish Russian-born mathematician from the United States.

Nowadays, approximately 300 people live in Villa Baviera (what was once Colonia Dignidad), which refused to bury Schafer in its territory. He was buried in a different cemetery after his adoptive daughter received a special donation for this purpose.

"Israel Apartheid Week" reaches Latin America

Last month, several universities around the world took part in the sixth yearly "Israel Apartheid Week" (IAW). Three Latin American cities took part in IAW 2010: Bogotá (Colombia), Puebla (Mexico) and Caracas (Venezuela). This is the second year on the list for both Puebla (2008, but not 2009) and Caracas (2009), while it is Bogotá’s first. No other Latin American cities have ever participated.

The programs consisted of the typical activities: flyers, movies, lectures, exhibitions, and events that attack Israel fiercely. Each city that hosts an IAW has its own programming. However, the common denominator among all cities is that many (if not most) of the organizers are stubbornly biased against Israel. They often twist words and facts, and employ manipulation techniques that, as a result, may leave the audience with wrong information. A perfect example of this is found on the description for an event in IAW Puebla, 'Velas por Gaza' ('Candles for Gaza'.) It reads: "En memoria de todos las victimas que han muerto bajo el control, represión, intifadas del Gobierno Sionista de Israel." (Israel Apartheid Week website) Translation: "In memory of all the victims that have died under the control, repression and intifadas of the Zionist Government of Israel."

According to Merriam-Webster, an intifada means "REBELLION, UPRISING; specifically : an armed uprising of Palestinians against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip." Do the organizers in Puebla really know what an intifada is? Perhaps they simply do not understand that the Palestinians own the patent for carrying them out. In addition, they refer to the Israeli government as 'Zionist.' Zionism is the desire of the Jewish people to return to their homeland in the Land of Israel, thus defines by nature the Israeli government. It is also a word that is commonly demonized by anti-Israel groups, who commonly employ it as a synonym of nonsense expressions, including "Israeli apartheid."

Venezuela is one of the few Latin American countries to recognize "the State of Palestine." Full diplomatic relations, including mutual embassies, were established last year. (27/4/09, TeleSurTV) The Venezuelan government even promoted IAW Caracas. Aporrea (a Venezuelan government-owned "news" agency) published an article about the event last month, which begins with "Anótenlo en sus calendarios! – El pueblo bolivariano se solidariza con el pueblo Palestino en La sexta semana internacional contra el apartheid israelí se celebrará en todo el mundo del 1 al 8 de marzo, 2010. […] El año pasado Caracas y más de 40 ciudades de todo el mundo participaron en esta convocatoria, que tuvo lugar tras el brutal asalto contra el pueblo palestino de la franja de Gaza." (Aporrea, 2/3/10) Translation: "Mark down your calendars! – The Bolivarian nation is showing solidarity with the Palestinian people. The sixth international week against Israeli apartheid will be celebrated around the world from the 1st to the 8th of March, 2010. […] Last year, Caracas and more than 40 cities around the world participated in this event, which took place after the brutal assault against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip."

While Mexico and Colombia do not formally recognize a Palestinian state, there is some sort of acknowledgement since each of these countries host a Palestinian Special Delegation.

The Latin American branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center offered the universities involved to "assist in organizing campus activities to promote dialogue and a culture of peace, while isolating voices of hatred and intolerance." (Simon Wiesenthal Center, 18/3/10)

Argentina: Anti-Semitic Attack during Pesach

On 1/4/10, anti-Semitic graffiti was found in Santa Teresita, in the province of Buenos Aires. The graffiti consisted of swastikas and inscriptions in German, such as "Morten Juden" (Death to Jews). The incident was immediately reported to the police and security was tightened in the hotel where a group of about 200 Jews, including community leaders, were celebrating Pesach. That same night, individuals in motorcycles passed by the hotel shouting similar offensive expressions. As of today, the culprits have not been found. Many Jewish Argentineans from the Orthodox community travel yearly to coastal cities (including Santa Teresita) to celebrate Pesach.

The Jewish community requested mediation and immediate action from Ministry of Justice to find and inculpate the people responsible for the hate crime. (1/4/10, Prensa Judía) Meanwhile, Eduardo Camaño, Minister of Government for the Province of Buenos Aires, issued a release that stated: "Rechazamos cualquier acto que agravie y atente contra la comunidad judía, por cuyos miembros sentimos el más profundo respeto”. ("We reject any action that aggravates and attacks the Jewish community, for whose members we feel the deepest respect.") The provincial authorities allegedly started an investigation immediately after the attack. (1/4/10, La Crónica)

Investigators are attempting to determine whether this was an isolated case, given that Santa Teresita once housed a Nazi criminal. Dino Šakić was a Croatian who directed the Jasenovac concentration camp from 1942 to 1944. After an investigation in 1998, the 76-year old Šakić was extradited to Croatia, where he was convicted and sent to prison for 20 years. He died incarcerated ten years later. (21/7/08, CBC)

Country profile #1: Argentina

In Numbers:
• 19th century and before: European and Mediterranean businesspeople arrived in Argentina, forming the first Jewish community in Buenos Aires in 1862. As with the marranos (Spanish and Portuguese crypto-Jews) from previous centuries, these assimilated into Argentinean culture and Catholicism. Starting in 1881, after the pogroms in Russia and Romania, several thousands of Jews immigrated to Argentina.
• 1906-1912: 13,000 new Jewish immigrants per year (mostly European, but also some Moroccans and Turks.)
• 1920: there were more than 150,000 Jews in Argentina.
• 1930s and early 1940s: Argentina was inhospitable to the Jews before the Holocaust. It is estimated that 30,000-50,000 of Jews arrived from Europe by 1943, many of them illegally.
• 1940s and 1950s: Jewish immigration from the Middle East.
• 1950: there were 310,000-320,000 Jews in Argentina (historical peak.)
• 1976-1983: about 1,000 Jews disappeared during the Dirty War. As a result of the war, about a million Jews left Argentina. Many returned when the war was over and the rest remained abroad.
• 1948-2001: approximately 50,000 Argentinean Jews made Aliyah (immigration to Israel)
• Early 2000s: severe economic crisis in 2001 caused several thousands of Jews to leave Argentina. Many of these emigrants are now returning to Argentina.
• Current population is estimated at 184,500, making it the largest Jewish community in Latin America and the seventh largest in the world (1.4% of world Jewry.) 0.5% of the general Argentinean population is Jewish (American Jewish Year Book, 2006)

The Historical Situation:
• Before World War I: anti-Semitism was rare in Argentina.
• 1918-1930: following the Russian revolution, anti-Semitism rose due to anti-revolutionary feelings. On January 7-13, 1919, there was even a pogrom against the Jews, who suffered from physical beatings and damages to their property.
• 1946-1955: Juan Peron was elected president. On the one hand, Peron was good to the Jews as he expressed recognition for their rights and established relations with Israel in 1949. On the other hand, he was a Nazi sympathizer who gave refuge to Nazi war criminals, making Argentina a safe-haven for Nazis. At the same time, he halted Jewish immigration to Argentina. After a military coup overthrew Peron from power in 1955, a new wave of anti-Semitism began.
• 1960: Israeli agents abducted the notorious Nazi, Adolf Eichmann, in Buenos Aires. His trial the following year provoked new anti-Semitism in Argentina.
• 1976-1983: Argentina was under military rule. Out of the 9,000 disappeared people during the Dirty War, 1,000 were Jews. After democracy was restored in Argentina, anti-Semitism declined and the Jews were placed in many high government positions.
• 1988: the Argentinean parliament passed a new law against racism and anti-Semitism.
• 1989-1999: under Carlos Menem's leadership, many Jews were appointed to his government and relations with Israel were quite positive. Several serious anti-Semitic incidents happened while he was president. The most notorious of these were the bombings of the Israeli Embassy in 1992 (32 people were killed) and of the Jewish community headquarters (AMIA) in 1994. The latter killed 87 people and wounded 100 others. A Hizbollah suicide bomber was responsible for the operation, allegedly with vast support from Iran (which naturally denies its involvement). Carlos Menem and some others are currently undergoing trial for alerting Alberto Jacinto Kanoore Edul, who was behind the AMIA bombing, and for covering significant evidence.

The Community Today:
There are fewer than 200,000 Jews in Argentina, of which 90% live in Buenos Aires and the rest in cities such as Rosario, Cordoba and Santa Fe.
The community's institutions and individuals were deeply affected by the Argentinean economic crisis earlier this decade. About one quarter of the Jews in Argentina live below the poverty line and the AMIA community center (the one that was bombed in 1994 and constructed right after) is now trying to repay a large millionaire debt.
The DAIA (Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas) is the political arm of the Jewish community. Buenos Aires has several synagogues: 50 Orthodox, 21 Conservative and a few reform. Argentina has more than 70 Jewish educational institutions of all types, and in Buenos Aires, 17,000 Jewish children study in the Jewish educational system.

Latin America, Israel and the Jews

The most recent survey of Jewish population (2006) stipulates that around 393,100 Jews, or 3.0% of the global Jewish population, lives in Latin America (Spanish America and Brazil). In comparison, there are 373,500 Jews (2.9% of global Jewish population) living in Canada, which has the fourth largest Jewish population in the world. (American Jewish Year Book, 2006)

The physical movement of Jewish populations in the twentieth century, together with the Holocaust, created a new global demographic profile for the Jews. Latin America absorbed many Jewish families before and after World War II. At the same time, plenty of Nazi criminals were given refuge in Latin America, including notorious murderers such as Adolf Eichmann. Combined with the influence of Spanish anti-Semitism, which dates back to several centuries ago, a non-mainstream trend of anti-Semitism was created in Latin America. Add to that anti-Israel views. Journalists such as Jose Levy (CNN en Español) and Shlomo Slutsky (El Clarín newspaper, Argentina) are clearly biased against Israel in their reportages. Their motives may be simply marketability and sales. However, the damage is made to the Jews and to Israel, regardless of the reasons.

We cannot allow the anti-Semites to win the information war, in any part of the world. That is why I, am a Latin American Jew, am starting a blog about anti-Semitism in Latin America and about the relationship that countries in this region have with Israel. Much of the information is inaccessible to the world, since it is mostly in Spanish. My job from now on will be to communicate, summarize and explain anti-Semitic attacks, bias in the press and other relevant information from Latin America to the world, in English.
